History: Washington DC declared capital of the United States
On this day in 1790, Congress selected a swampy, humid site on the Potomac River between Maryland and Virginia as the nation’s permanent capital. Washington, in the newly designated District of Columbia, was named after Revolutionary leader and first president George Washington. He recognized the area’s economic promise and easy access to navigable rivers. Washington then commissioned French architect Pierre L’Enfant to design the city, and in 1793 the first cornerstones of the president’s mansion—later called the White House—were laid. George Washington never lived there; John Adams became its first resident in 1800, and Thomas Jefferson moved in the following year.
