Joseph Christian Leyendecker (1874–1951) was a renowned American illustrator and graphic designer, born in Germany and raised in Chicago. He began his art career at 16, later studying at the Chicago Art Institute and the Académie Julian in Paris. Known for his technical brilliance, Leyendecker became one of the top commercial artists of his time, creating over 400 magazine covers, including 322 for The Saturday Evening Post. A mentor to Norman Rockwell, Leyendecker’s work defined early 20th-century American illustration with its idealized depictions of life.
