Davis Cup Established in 1900
On this day in 1900, American collegian Dwight Filley Davis inaugurated the Davis Cup by challenging British tennis players to compete against his Harvard team at the Longwood Cricket Club in Massachusetts. Davis, who devised the three-day format still used today, captained the U.S. team and won both his singles and doubles matches, leading Harvard to a 3-0 sweep in the rain-shortened event. The following year, Britain claimed the trophy, and by 1904, teams from Belgium, France, and Australasia joined the competition. Now the premier trophy of international team tennis, the Davis Cup involves dozens of nations vying for the finals each year. Reflecting on its legacy before his death in 1945, Davis remarked, “If I had known of its coming significance, it would have been cast in gold.”
