History Today: Basketball was invented in 1891
On January 20, 1892, the YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York, hosted the first official basketball game. The sport had been invented just a month earlier by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, who developed 13 original rules for a game suitable for indoor play during cold winters. Initially, each team had nine players, and the objective was to throw a soccer ball into peach baskets mounted on the gym’s balconies. Scoring required a pause in play while someone retrieved the ball using a ladder. After the first public games in 1892, basketball’s popularity grew rapidly. The first intercollegiate game took place in 1895, and the first professional league was established in 1898. It wasn’t until 1905 that nets replaced the original peach baskets.
