Golfer's Day, Lancome, 1991
History: 1st-ever all-female golf tournament was held in 1811
On this day in 1811, the first ever all-female golf tournament was held at Musselburgh Links, Scotland which is recognized as one of the oldest golf courses in the world. The competitors were local fishwives, women from the nearby fishing community but none of the players’ names were recorded. Winners were awarded creels (baskets for carrying fish) and other practical items, reflecting the local fishing culture. The tournament is celebrated today as a landmark in the history of women’s sports and has contributed to Musselburgh’s legacy as a historic site for the game of golf.
