1940s Disney Forest Fire Prevention Poster

History: Euro Disneyland opens in 1992

On this day in 1992, the happiest place on earth opened its doors on the European continent in Marne-la-Vallée, near Paris, France. Attracting some 10 million visitors each year, Disneyland Paris (as it is called today) is the most popular theme park in Europe.

Below is a rare Disney poster used for the prevention of forest fires in California. The US government enlisted the help of Walt Disney, renowned for his previous contributions to government-led public awareness initiatives. By 1943, “Bambi” had been released, albeit without meeting the box office expectations. However, the endearing characters remained firmly entrenched in the public consciousness. Walt Disney, concerned about wildfires in California, agreed to loan Bambi and other woodland characters to the Cooperative Forest Fire Prevention for one year. The poster depicts the cherished Disney characters Bambi (a deer), Thumper (a rabbit), and Flower (a skunk) and achieved remarkable success. When the agreement with Disney concluded, CFFP found itself in need of a new mascot, which paved the way for the birth of Smokey Bear in 1945.

The poster is part of our April 20 sale. View at https://tinyurl.com/4npv2d87
