History: Nelson Mandela released from prison in 1990
Nelson Mandela (18 July 1918 – 5 December 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and political leader who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. Mandela was arrested in 1962 as the chief leader of the African National Congress (ANC), an active opponent of the government’s segregation laws, and sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the state. He spent more than 27 years in prison. In 1989 South African President Willem de Klerk abolished all apartheid laws. In 1993, de Klerk and Mandela were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for a peaceful end of apartheid.
