History: North German Lloyd founded in 1857
On this day in 1857, the German shipping company Norddeutscher Lloyd (NDL) (North German Lloyd) was founded by Henrich Meier and Eduard Crüsemann in Bremen. NDL became one of the most important German shipping companies of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The passenger shipping line served North- and South America, East Asia and Australia. In 1970, NDL merged with Hamburg America Line (HAPAG) to form Hapag-Lloyd AG.
