Simplon Tunnel opens in 1906
Today in History: Simplon Tunnel opens in 1906
The Simplon Tunnel is a railway tunnel on the Simplon railway that connects Brig, Switzerland and Domodossola, Italy, through the Alps, providing a shortcut under the Simplon Pass route. It actually consists of two single-track tunnels built nearly 15 years apart. It was the longest railway tunnel in the world for most of the twentieth century, from 1906 until 1982, when the Daishimizu Tunnel opened. Work on the first tube of the Simplon Tunnel commenced in 1898. The two halves of the railway tunnel were linked in 1905. It was hoped to finish the first shaft for a formal opening in October, but the first train did not run through until January 1906 and the opening was in May. The tunnel provided a route from London to Istanbul for the Simplon Orient Express. The Simplon’s second shaft was delayed by the First World War and not completed until 1921.
