On this day in 1960, John Fitzgerald Kennedy is elected 35th President of the United States. He is the youngest incumbent in US history. His opponent, Republican Richard M. Nixon, is defeated in the election rather narrowly with 219 to 300 votes. Kennedy had been serving as a Massachusetts Senator since 1952. He was assassinated in Dallas on November 22, 1963.
