History: Alois Senefelder born in 1771
On November 6, 1771, Alois Senefelder was born, setting in motion a series of events that would change printing forever. A struggling actor and playwright, Senefelder couldn’t afford expensive engraving for his plays. This led to a happy accident: he discovered that a laundry list he’d jotted down with a grease pencil on a piece of limestone could be used to create a relief print. Two years of experimentation later, he had perfected lithography, a new method that paved the way for modern, high-volume poster printing.
