Woodstock ’99: A Music Festival Gone Wrong
The Woodstock ’99 music festival, held July 23-25, 1999, in Rome, New York, aimed to celebrate the legacy of the original 1969 event, but instead devolved into chaos and violence. Factors like extreme heat, overpriced food and water, inadequate sanitation, and aggressive musical acts contributed to rioting, looting, and fires that marred the festival’s legacy. While some attendees reported having a positive experience, the event is primarily remembered for its unfortunate blend of violence, destruction, and allegations of sexual assault. The Red Hot Chili Peppers said that the view from onstage reminded them of the movie Apocalypse Now. The San Francisco Chronicle simply called the festival “the day the music died.”
