A New Chapter: The Founding of Ireland (Eire)

On this day, December 29th, in 1937, a new constitution was established by national referendum, formally changing the name of the Irish Free State to Ireland (or Éire). This act was a key step in Ireland’s journey toward complete independence, furthering the separation from the British Commonwealth which had begun with the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921. It was a foundational moment of self-determination, though the official declaration of a republic wouldn’t come until 1949. Today, we look back at the establishment of modern Ireland, a country whose rich culture, beautiful landscapes, and passionate history have inspired artists and travelers for centuries.
