On this day in 1881, Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, Spain. Over his 80-year career, he created more than 50,000 works—paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, and more. Best known for pioneering Cubism with Georges Braque, Picasso also gave the world masterpieces like Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) and the haunting Guernica (1937), a powerful protest against war and fascism. One of the most influential artists of the 20th century, Picasso continued creating with extraordinary energy until his death in 1973 at age 91.
