History: Jules Cheret died in 1932
On this day in 1836, Jules Chéret was born in Paris. Often called “the father of the modern poster,” he revolutionized graphic design with his vibrant lithographs for Parisian cabarets, music halls, and theaters such as the Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergère. Influenced by his years in London, Chéret brought a bold, colorful style to the streets of Paris and later launched the famous Maîtres de l’Affiche collection in 1895, showcasing leading poster artists of the era. His work inspired a generation of designers, including Toulouse-Lautrec, and earned him the Légion d’honneur in 1890. Though he also painted, it was his joyful advertising posters that made him a household name. Chéret lived to 96, leaving behind a legacy that shaped poster art as we know it today.
