History: 1st Commercial Jet Test Flight in 1949
On July 27, 1949, the British De Havilland Comet became the world’s first jet-propelled airliner to make a test flight in England. This aircraft significantly impacted the airline industry by enabling faster and higher flights, ultimately reducing travel times. The Comet 1A model entered commercial service with the British Overseas Aircraft Corporation (BOAC), the predecessor to British Airways, in 1952, initiating the first commercial jet service. While other airlines like Union Aéromaritime de Transport and Air France also acquired Comet 1As, the Comet’s initial success was cut short by structural problems, leading to a grounding of the fleet and eventually a shift in airline preference towards American-made jets like the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8.
