History: 1st U.S. Railroad Accident
The first recorded railroad accident in US history occurred on July 25, 1832, on the Granite Railway in Quincy, Massachusetts. Four individuals invited to observe stone transport were thrown from a vacant car when a cable broke, sending them over a 34-foot cliff, resulting in one fatality and serious injuries for the others. Despite this initial setback, railroads rapidly gained acceptance, growing from nearly 3,000 miles in the US by 1840 to a 30,000-mile network by 1860, surpassing Europe’s combined total. This expansion culminated in the completion of the first transcontinental railroad nine years later.
