History: Jean Cocteau born in 1889
On this day in 1889, French writer, painter and director Jean Cocteau was born. His avant-garde poetry and novels shaped European art of the 20th century just as strongly as his theoretical writings. As a director, he created masterpieces of surrealist films, such as “Beauty and the Beast” (1946). Influenced by Rimbaud, among others, he often dealt with mythological topics, f.ex. in “Orpheus” (1927).
