First Indoor Swimming Pool opens in London in 1742
On this day in 1742, London opened the world’s first indoor swimming pool—the Bagnio—on Lemon Street. For a guinea, well-to-do gentlemen could enjoy a 43-foot heated pool, away from the filth of the Thames and prying eyes. The facility also offered swim instruction and a cold plunge. Though luxurious for its time, the Bagnio’s name—also slang for brothel—hints at possible services beyond just swimming.
