History: Josef Albers born in 1888
Josef Albers (1888–1976) was a pioneering 20th-century artist and influential art educator. Born in Germany, he studied at the Bauhaus, where he later became a teacher and director. After emigrating to the U.S. in 1933, Albers taught at Black Mountain College and Yale University. His renowned series Homage to the Square and his 1963 book Interaction of Color profoundly shaped modern understandings of color and art. Albers’ work continues to inspire artists and designers worldwide.. Albers died in New Haven in 1976.
