History: Max Bill born in 1908
On this day in 1908, architect, artist, painter and graphic designer Max Bill was born in Winterthur, Switzerland. Influenced by Le Corbusier, Max Bill studied architecture at the Bauhaus (1927–29). In 1930 he set up his own studio in Zürich, concentrating on sculpture, painting, and architecture while earning his living by designing advertisements. In 1937 he formed the Allianz group of Swiss abstract artists. After 1944 he became increasingly active in industrial design. His use of austere geometric forms echoed his Bauhaus training. In the early 1950, Bill co-founded the Ulm School of Design in Germany; he later served as a professor of environmental design at the State Institute of Fine Arts, Hamburg (1967–74).
