History: Absinthe banned in France in 1915
On March 16, 1915, absinthe was outlawed in France. Because of its high alcoholic strength, and the constant campaigning of the prohibitionist movement, the production and sale of absinthe became increasingly heavily taxed and tightly regulated from the early 1900’s. In March of 1915, absinthe was declared a toxic product, and its manufacture and sale were completely prohibited. France lifted its ban in 1988. Today, absinthe is once again available in many parts of the world, albeit under strict regulations regarding thujone content.
