History: The Paris Eiffel Tower opens to the public in 1889

On June 3, 1889, the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, officially opened to the public. Designed by Gustave Eiffel as the entrance arch for the 1889 World’s Fair, the tower was initially met with criticism but quickly became a symbol of Paris and a global icon of architecture. Standing at 324 meters tall, the Eiffel Tower held the title of the world’s tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York City in 1930. Today, it remains one of the most visited and recognizable landmarks in the world, attracting millions of visitors each year.
