History: Leonetto Cappiello born in 1875
On this day in 1875, painter and poster artist Leonetto Cappiello was born in Livorno, Italy. Leonetto Cappiello started his career as a caricaturist before dedicating himself to poster art. Sometimes called the “father of the advertising poster,” Cappiello spent 40 active years in Paris, creating over 500 posters in his career.

This Panamose laundry detergent poster that will ‘magically make any garment appear as good as new’ is an extremely rare work by Cappiello. While occasionally seen as a metal sign, we were able to locate only one other copy of the full French 1-sheet poster ever offered at auction. We are proud to present this and nine other works by Cappiello in our April 20 sale.
