History: Vladimir Lenin dies in 1924
On this day in 1924, Vladimir Lenin, the architect of the Bolshevik Revolution and the first leader of the Soviet Union, dies of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 54. Under Lenin’s, the government nationalized industry and distributed land, and established the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in December of 1922. Upon Lenin’s death, his body was embalmed and placed in a mausoleum near the Moscow Kremlin. Petrograd was renamed Leningrad in his honor. Fellow revolutionary Joseph Stalin succeeded him as leader of the Soviet Union.
