History Today: Alcohol became illegal in most U.S. states in 1919
On this day in 1919, alcohol became illegal in most states of America. Americans were worried about the adverse effects that alcohol consumption brings. Upon being approved by a 36th state on January 16, 1919, the amendment was ratified as a part of the Constitution, making it illegal to manufacture, sell or transport alcohol. By the terms of the amendment, the country went dry one year later, on January 17, 1920. Prohibition ended with the ratification of the Twenty-first Amendment, which repealed the Eighteenth Amendment on December 5, 1933.
