History Today: Kyoto Protocol adopted in 1997
The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which commits its parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets – in essence, the closest thing to a working global agreement to fight climate change. A total of 192 countries have signed and ratified the Kyoto Protocol; only Afghanistan, Sudan & the USA have not signed the treaty.
