History: Khrushchev barred from visiting Disneyland in 1959
During Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev’s visit to the United States for a summit with President Dwight D. Eisenhower, his day in Los Angeles was a mix of amusement and tension. The visit to Twentieth Century Fox Studios included an encounter with Shirley MacLaine and a performance from the cast of “Can-Can.” However, things turned sour during Khrushchev’s introduction at Los Angeles Town Hall, as the studio’s president antagonized him by referencing his anti-capitalist remarks. Khrushchev’s anger intensified when he was denied entry to Disneyland due to security concerns, prompting a heated outburst. Despite these incidents, Khrushchev continued his trip through California and eventually returned to Washington for his meeting with Eisenhower.
