History: The Premiere of the “Blue Angel” in 1930
On this day in 1930, the German movie Der Blaue Engel (The Blue Angel) celebrated its premiere in Berlin, making Marlene Dietrich a new movie star. The film’s plot, which involved a disciplinarian professor falling for a cabaret singer, caused some controversy. The director originally wanted Brigitte Helm or Lucie Mannheim to play the singer, but eventually chose Dietrich, who had little experience but embodied the seductive Lola-Lola character. The film was a huge success, and Dietrich and the director went on to Hollywood.
