Today in History: Le Corbusier presents Unité d’habitation in 1952
The Unité d’habitation (Housing Unit) is a modernist residential housing design principle developed by the architect Le Corbusier, with the collaboration of painter-architect Nadir Afonso. The concept formed the basis of several housing developments designed by him throughout Europe. The most famous of these developments, which was supported by the French government and had been built since 1947, is located in south Marseille. Due to its construction, the “housing unit” was to enable new forms of communication and coexistence. The building complex for 1800 residents, consisting of 23 variations of apartments, included two “streets” within the settlement with shops, a school and a hotel. A kindergarten and a sports hall were also housed on the roof of the residential project.
