Today in History: Cap Arcona sunk in 1945
On this day in 1945, the German ship “Cap Arcona” laden with prisoners was sunk by the Royal Air Force in the East Sea. It is estimated that 5,800 people on board were killed – one of largest maritime losses of life. In this case, the latest British intelligence on the presence of war prisoners on the ship never reached the pilots who attacked them. As they made their final descent, the airmen likely believed they were attacking bona fide hostile targets. Ultimately, the fate of the Cap Arcona and its passengers was a tragic consequence of the fog of war.
