The American Professor Robert Hutchings Goddard (1882-1945) is considered the founder of modern astronautics. He is credited with building and launching the world’s first functional, liquid fuel rocket on March 16, 1926. Its flight lasted only two and a half seconds but the rocket flew an impressive 56 yards.
