Aids Awareness, c. 1990

December 1st is World AIDS Day, an annual observance with roots stretching back to a time of immense uncertainty and fear. First established in 1988, World AIDS Day was conceived by public information officers at the World Health Organization to focus global attention on the unfolding HIV/AIDS crisis. In the early 1980s, the disease was largely misunderstood, and diagnoses were often met with intense social stigma and isolation.
Over 35 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses since the start of the pandemic in 1981. The vintage posters and campaigns from that era reflect a desperate struggle for awareness and compassion. We observe this day to remember those lost, honor the history of activism, and reflect on the significant changes the epidemic has brought to global public health.
