History: Soviet Union established in 1922
97 years ago today,  the Soviet Republics of Russia, Ukraine, Transcaucasia, and Belarus joined forces to form the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) at their first All-Union Congress in Moscow. The formal proclamation was made from the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. The Soviet Union thus began its way to become the second world power – at the end of 1991, it dissolved into individual republics again.
