Today in History: Pony Express accelerates mail delivery in 1860
159 years ago today, riders for the Pony Express began a new relay mail service from St. Joseph, Missouri, to Sacramento, California, reducing the delivery time of messages and mail from one month to approximately 10 days. The idea was developed by the company Russell, Majors & Waddell. The pony route stretched across a 2000-mile trail and consisted of more than 100 stations with 500 horses and 80 riders. But the project proved to be a financial fiasco and rather short-lived. Tours initially estimated at $500 ended up costing fifteen times as much and eventually lead its founders to bankruptcy. Furthermore, when the Pacific Telegraph line was completed, the need for a Pony Express became obsolete. While the service was terminated after only 19 months on October 24, 1861, the Pony Express remains a legend of the American West.
