Raymond Savignac – A Few Rare Treasures

Raymond Savignac (1907-2002) was a Parisian poster artist and cartoonist. He studied at the Lavoisier School and then worked as a draftsman for the Paris Transportation Company. He probably discovered his passion when he found a job working in commercial animated art. He met A.M. Cassandre in 1935 when Savignac received a commission through the Alliance Graphique. Savignac ended up working as an assistant to the well-known graphic designer and when Cassandre left for New York in 1938, Savignac worked as a model draftsman for the Draeger Brothers art printer. Unhappy with his position, he left Draegers, enlisted in Dijon and later found himself back in Paris, unemployed and broke.

In 1949, Savignac and his friend Bernard Villemot decided to hold an exhibition of their non-commissioned artwork. The joint exhibition at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts launched Savignac’s career when one of his illustrations received an enthusiastic response: the famous Monsavon Au Lait poster.

In his art, Savignac portrayed a cheerful humor with brightly colored images that helped establish an immediate connection between product and consumer. This formula for success would serve the artist well. Savignac dedicated himself to poster art and was in demand by many of the large advertisers (Apsro, Citroen, Dunlop, Life, Olivetti) for decades to come. He was, perhaps, one of the last great Parisian poster artists. In 1979, Savignac left Paris and settled in Normandy where he continued to accept commissions. His career lasted for over 50 years during which time he produced more than 600 posters. He passed away in 2002, at the age of 94, at his home in Trouville-sur-Mer in France.
