Today in History: Wrigley Company founded in Chicago in 1891
Business man William Wrigley Jr. originally sold soap and baking powder. As a sales pitch, he gave away free sticks of gum with his products. Curiously, the free chewing gum seemed more popular than the baking powder and Wrigley quickly reoriented his business to produce his own line of gum. The rest is history. 125 years later, Wrigley’s continues to be by far the largest manufacturer and marketer of chewing gum in the world. The poster below was created by Otis Shepard during the 1930s and will be part of our May 2016 poster auction.
